RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.--Lenovo today introduced Lenovo Asset Recovery Services (ARS), a new set of services to help business customers in the U.S. and Canada manage their end-of-life technology equipment by providing computer take-back, data destruction, refurbishment and recycling. Lenovo also offers additional services including inventory, value assessment, on-site deinstallation and data encryption. Lenovo can facilitate donation of the old computers or can help customers receive cash back for them. After three years, typically, a customer can receive 10 to 15 percent of the value back of the original purchase price of the computer.1 With this eco-solution, customers can fulfill green information technology commitments knowing their equipment is disposed of in a secure and environmentally-responsible way. The computers are discarded with data destruction performed according to the U.S. Department of Defense standards. According to Gartner, managing data security and privacy risks followed by environmental risks are top customer concerns when it comes to computer disposal.2 And of customers surveyed, they cited convenience and ease of use as a top reason for picking an external disposal provider. The new service gives customers an end-to-end solution from Lenovo from the point of computer purchase to take-back and disposal. Lenovo’s expertise in managing the end-of-life computers can help customers eliminate the time and expense of managing the disposal themselves. As the number of computers increases in the U.S. and older ones are retired, recycling programs are helping give new life to end-of-life products. Lenovo first prioritizes refurbishment and reuse and then focuses on recycling. In 2007, Lenovo managed or financed the proper disposal of more than 38 million pounds, or the weight of more than 7.6 million bricks, of Lenovo owned or customer returned computer equipment. More than 93 percent of that was reused as products or recycled as materials. Many of the recovered computer materials are recycled into new products, such as automobiles, park benches, concrete filler and even into some Lenovo products. Lenovo expects adding the ARS to its existing take back programs will help grow customer returns by more than 30 percent in 2008. Lenovo also offers recycling options to individual consumers in the U.S. and other countries around the world. As part of Lenovo’s Environmentally Conscious Products Program, the company considers the environment when designing its products by making them close to 100 percent recyclable, using recycled materials where possible and making them more energy-efficient. “The Lenovo Asset Recovery Services is one more step in our commitment to being good stewards of our environment,” said Fran O’Sullivan, senior vice president, product group, Lenovo. “We’re focused on greening the entire lifecycle of our computers, from increasing the lifespan and designing for upgradeability to improving energy efficiency. We’ve made considerable progress with our EPEAT Gold-rated notebooks, desktops and monitors thus far and are striving to expand our portfolio of Gold-rated products.” Lenovo has introduced several products that meet the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool’s (EPEAT) Gold rating. They include the ThinkCentre A61e and M57/M57p eco desktops, the ThinkPad X300 notebook and more than nine ThinkVision monitors including the ThinkVision L193p, the first EPEAT Gold-rated monitor in the industry. Pricing and Availability3 Pricing for the standard Asset Recovery Service package varies with customer requirements. The service will be available beginning June 30 to businesses with limited support for their multi-national operations. ARS will be sold through Lenovo sales representatives. AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands--The WiMAX Forum today announced the first ten Mobile WiMAX products received the WiMAX Forum Certified™ Seal of Approval for the 2.5 GHz profile (titled MP05) at the WiMAX Forum Global Congress in Amsterdam. The WiMAX Forum also revealed its roadmap for 3.5 and 2.3 GHz equipment certification during the show, with plans for equipment in the 3.5 GHz band to achieve certification by the end of 2008. Following months of rigorous testing to ensure that each product met the strict WiMAX Forum interoperability and conformance standards, the announcement included four base stations and six mobile station modules (also known as terminals) operating in the 2.5 GHz frequency band from eight WiMAX Forum member companies, including Airspan Networks, Alvarion Ltd., Beceem Communications Inc., Intel Corporation, Motorola Inc., Samsung Electronics Company, Ltd., Sequans Communications and ZyXEL. All of the newly certified 2.5 GHz mobile station modules passed the mandatory MIMO testing protocols. "With the unwavering support of our members, the WiMAX Forum team has fulfilled our promise to ensure that WiMAX operators have the certified equipment and devices needed to deliver mobile internet services that consumers want," said Ron Resnick, president of the WiMAX Forum, during a news conference in Amsterdam. “With the successful completion of extensive 2.5 GHz testing, we've laid the groundwork to speed up additional profile certifications and ultimately to continue advancing global WiMAX deployments at a record pace.” Alvarion Ltd., Motorola Inc., Samsung Electronics Company, Ltd. and Sequans Communications each received the WiMAX Forum Certified Seal of Approval for a 2.5 GHz base station. Airspan Networks, Beceem Communications Inc., Intel Corporation, Samsung Electronics Company, Ltd., Sequans Communications and ZyXEL each received the WiMAX Forum Certified Seal of Approval for a 2.5 GHz mobile station module. These 2.5 GHz products were certified at the WiMAX Forum’s lead certification testing laboratory, which is operated by AT4 wireless in Malaga, Spain. Products achieving Mobile WiMAX certification were tested for functionality that supports mobility through rigorous testing including interoperability amongst vendor equipment and MIMO capabilities. This achievement of being designated as WIMAX Forum Certified ensures confidence in the interoperability of WiMAX products for the 305 service providers deploying WiMAX services in 118 countries worldwide. The WiMAX Forum estimates that more than 100 Mobile WiMAX products will be certified by the end of 2008, and by 2011 more than 1,000 products will undergo Mobile WiMAX certification. The WiMAX Forum plans to stay ahead of the demand for certification with a robust global lab infrastructure, including six WiMAX Forum partner labs that are now open and ready to accept products for certification testing in China, Korea, Spain, U.S., along with two labs in Taiwan, ADT and TTC/CS. The WiMAX Forum plans to open two more certification labs by the end of 2008 in India and Japan and an additional lab in Brazil in 2009 in order to support the anticipated growing demands in those regions. 3.5 GHz WiMAX Forum Certified Products Here by Year-End Certification of 2.5 GHz equipment has set the baseline for subsequent profiles, speeding up the testing cycle for all equipment in the future. The WiMAX Forum also announced today that it will begin to accept certification applications for 3.5 GHz equipment during 3Q 2008, with testing to begin in 4Q 2008 and certification completed for those products before the end of the year. “We are setting an industry precedent by conducting certification in a way that it has never been done before,” added Resnick. “To ensure interoperability for global operators and consumers, the WiMAX Forum supports the end-to-end certification process from equipment development, to test equipment validation and finally product certification. The WiMAX Forum is the only consortium to certify base station equipment which is key to ensure true network interoperability and a high quality of service among user devices and network equipment.” The 3.5 GHz band includes the validation and certification of three profiles based on channel bandwidths of 5, 7, and 10 MHz. SANTA CLARA, Calif.--With a goal to connect and assist the more than 50 million caregivers in the United States, Intel Corporation today unveiled ConnectingForCare.com, the first online community of its kind for family caregivers, nurses, social workers and others to share information and provide emotional support, filling a void in today’s healthcare system. Developed by Intel in collaboration with the National Family Caregivers Association, ConnectingForCare.com uses the Internet to build a sense of community among caregivers through interactive forums, personal profiles and links to the latest research or treatments. The forums will allow caregivers to engage with one another at any time, ultimately leading to better coordination of care between the various groups. The Web site launches today in the United States and can also be accessed in the United Kingdom at ConnectingForCare.co.uk. “Family caregivers are providing 80 percent of all of the long term care for people with chronic illness and disabilities,” said Suzanne Mintz, president and co-founder of the National Family Caregivers Association. “Caregivers are often the primary providers of this care, so it is crucial that we work to establish better lines of communication between all members of the care team. We are excited to work with Intel on Connecting for Care to facilitate the flow of information while showing family caregivers that they are not alone.” Tens of millions of Americans currently serve as family or professional caregivers, including campaign spokesperson Ian Ziering of “Beverly Hills: 90210” and “Dancing with the Stars.” As one of the 50 million Americans who provide care for a chronically ill, disabled or aging family member, Ziering serves as a caregiver for his father, who has experienced kidney failure, and has witnessed the urgent need for improvements in communication and resource sharing that can lead to better care. “When my dad’s kidney failed, my brothers and I became instant caregivers without any past experience or knowledge and we were forced to navigate a world totally new to us,” said Ziering. “In the role of caregiver, I’ve often wished that I could better connect with other people who share my experiences – whether about a specific treatment option, maneuvering through the healthcare system or even for emotional support – and ConnectingForCare.com is a place for people like me to do that.” ConnectingForCare.com is part of Intel’s commitment to finding new and innovative ways to apply technology to support today’s caregiving population and improve health outcomes. Since 1999, Intel has focused on research-driven solutions for improving the care of aging and chronically ill individuals in home and clinical settings. This research continues to drive a variety of product offerings, aimed to assist those with various conditions as well as members of the care team. For example, the Intel Mobile Clinical Assistant (MCA) platform, a reference design for an easy to use tablet PC that incorporates a barcode scanner, digital camera and wireless connectivity, was designed to enable nurses to access patient records at the point of care. The MCA platform helps nurses spend more time with patients, remain connected while on the move and manage the administration of medications. Intel shares a vision with healthcare leaders of using technology to enhance the healthcare experience, increase quality of care and reduce the burden on the healthcare system. This campaign is a natural outgrowth of Intel’s focus on people-centered innovation, providing a way to not only improve the quality of healthcare and reduce the burden of caregiving, but also a way to connect people and build a sense of community. “Intel respects and honors the important work of caregivers around the world,” said Louis Burns, vice president and general manager of Intel’s Digital Health Group. “By developing ConnectingForCare.com we hope to not only celebrate this dedication, but also to use our expertise in technology as a tool to support and encourage the community to share information and ultimately improve the quality of life for patients and their caregivers.” ConnectingForCare.com provides various ways for caregivers to find information and interact with one another. Highlights include: A page called My Connections where caregivers can create a personal profile and join a variety of networks based on their specific needs and interests. Users can directly connect with other caregivers within their networks to share stories, tips and support. Forums and message boards where caregivers can discuss issues or concerns and pose questions to the community, linking caregivers to each other in an active dialogue 24 hours a day. Information centers on a range of chronic diseases and conditions where caregivers can search for information and connect on health-specific topics. Within these centers, users can add comments and link to the latest research and resources on caring for individuals with specific conditions, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, diabetes, COPD and heart failure. A section called Spotlight on Caregivers where patients, loved ones and fellow caregivers can share their stories and publicly honor caregivers who have touched their lives.
