The State Department has issued a request for information for systems that collect relevant online information to “analyze and track global developments in (near) real-time.” The RFI notes that the department’s Operations Center uses social media to stay informed and spread information to citizens. The State Department listed its needs for a monitoring system, including: aiding the ability to verify the credibility of a source; ensuring the accuracy of machine-generated content from different languages; and distributing information quickly. Among other questions on the RFI, the department asked, “What are industry’s current capabilities to measure the validity of an online information source (author, news agency, social media handle, etc.), and to assess the certainty of a breaking or ongoing event?” The RFI will remain open until August 31.
