The Department of the Navy Chief Information Officer (CIO) announced this week that Barry Tanner will serve as the next deputy CIO.

Tanner previously spent nearly four years as the command operations officer at the Navy Program Executive Office for Digital and Enterprise Services.

The new deputy CIO began his career in the Navy as a division officer in 1991. Tanner has spent a total of more than 30 years in the Navy, holding various cyber positions.

He has previously served as the N6/CIO and reserve component director of the U.S. Navy Fleet Cyber Command and as the information professional community lead at the Navy Information Forces Reserve Command.

He also served as the CIO and commanding officer of the U.S. Navy Reserve from 2001-2008 and as the Reserve Program CIO at the Office of Naval Research from 2005-2006.

Kevin Roberts held the Navy deputy CIO role on an acting basis from March 2023 to May 2024 when he moved to a new position as special assistant to the deputy secretary of defense for technology and innovation priorities.
