William Evanina has stepped down as director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center (NCSC), after six years at the helm of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) component that has the leading counterintelligence activities role in defending the intelligence collecting Federal government and private-sector entities that face risk of attack by foreign adversaries.

Evanina, who logged 24 years at the FBI prior to heading NCSC, said in a social media post that he was “honored and humbled to have been surrounded by amazing, dedicated, and vigilant professionals serving around the nation, and the globe, protecting our great nation.”

“I want to especially thank the women and men of NCSC, and the Intelligence Community, for being the best in the world,” he said. “There is much more to do. I am confident with enduring partnerships and continued focus, our integrated defenses and partnerships will continue to expand to protect our nation, secrets, people, data, and systems.”

Michael Orlando is now serving as NCSC Acting Director, according to the ODNI website. He is a 17-year FBI veteran who took over as deputy director of NCSC in November 2020.
