Federal technology veteran Jason Gray is starting his new job as chief information officer at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) next week, according to sources. His start date on the new job is August 13.

The move to USAID marks the end of his long tenure as CIO at the Department of Education, where he led the agency’s technology efforts since 2016.

At USAID, Gray will be tasked with similar duties, including managing and overseeing agency cybersecurity and technology management of the agency. At the Education Department, Gray’s accomplishments include modernizing the technology structure of the department to better suit the needs for remote work and increase the use of cloud infrastructure.

Before joining the Education Department, Gray was association CIO at the Department of Transportation from 2015 to 2016, and as a senior advisor and customer advocate for benefits at the Department of Veterans Affairs from 2013 to 2015.

“I and all the dedicated public servants at the U.S. Department of Education are grateful to Jason for his years of loyal and exemplary service to this agency and to our nation’s students, families, and taxpayers,” said U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education Cindy Marten earlier this month. “Because of his tireless leadership of our information technology efforts, our agency’s information security posture has never been stronger,” she said.
