Rajive Mathur is stepping down as CIO and Deputy Commissioner at the Social Security Administration (SSA) effective October 26, an agency spokesperson confirmed to MeriTalk.

Mathur will remain as a senior advisor to agency head Commissioner Andrew Saul through the end of this year.

At the same time, Sean Brune will take over as CIO on Oct. 26. Brune is now SSA’s assistant deputy commissioner and Deputy CIO/IT Modernization. Previous to his current position, Brune was SSA’s Assistant Deputy Commissioner for Budget, Finance, Quality, and Management.

Mathur took the CIO helm at SSA in June 2017, following a five-year stint as Director of the Online Services Office at the Internal Revenue Service. Prior to his government service, Mathur held positions with Fidelity Investments and AOL, among other firms.

He won plaudits earlier this year from Department of Veterans Affairs CIO Jim Gfrerer, who

cited him as a source of important lessons for the Federal CIO community during government agency adjustments to the coronavirus pandemic.
