The Department of Defense’s (DoD) Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security Ronald S. Moultrie will step down from his position at the end of this month, the Pentagon said today.
Moultrie was sworn in to that position in June 2021, and since then has served as the principal advisor to the Secretary of Defense on intelligence, counterintelligence, and security matters.
Since stepping into the role almost three years ago, Moultrie “has shown a far-sighted approach to complex intelligence issues, built a rapport with domestic and international intelligence leaders, and established stewardship of our Defense Intelligence and Security Enterprise,” Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III said in a statement.
Prior to his current post, Moultrie’s 36-plus year public service career included senior leadership positions throughout the DoD and the National Intelligence Community (NIC).
Moultrie’s previous NIC roles include being a senior member at the Central Intelligence Agency, leading a major office within the Directorate of Science & Technology, and as a senior executive officer serving the Director of National Intelligence. He later rejoined the National Security Agency (NSA) as a senior executive, where he remained until retirement in 2015 as NSA’s Director of Operations.
“Ron has left a mark on this department through his 44 years of public service. Our department and our intelligence and security enterprise are measurably more capable of tackling tomorrow’s challenges because of Ron’s distinguished service,” said Austin.
The DoD did not provide any further details regarding Moultrie’s plans past his retirement.
