President Trump announced Sunday via social media that he has appointed Patrick Shanahan the acting Secretary of Defense effective Jan. 1, 2019, succeeding Gen. James Mattis who resigned as Secretary of Defense last week. Shanahan has been Deputy Secretary of Defense since July 2017, and before that was senior vice president-supply chain and operations at Boeing.
