Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., chairwoman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, has named five subcommittee vice chairs, including Rep. Katie Porter, D-Calif., who will serve as vice chair of the Government Operations subcommittee that is a prime conduit for Federal IT-related legislation.
The other new vice chairs are Rep. Kweisi Mfume, D-Md., for the National Security subcommittee; Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., for the Economic and Consumer Policy subcommittee; Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., for the Civil Rights and Civil Liberties subcommittee; and Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., for the Environment subcommittee.
“I am proud to announce five phenomenal and dedicated leaders to serve as the vice chairs of our five subcommittees,” Chairwoman Maloney said in a statement. “I believe this team of members are eager and excited to work together to build our country back better with the Biden Administration. I look forward to supporting their efforts to tackle the most significant economic, Federal workforce, national security, environmental, and civil rights challenges facing our nation.”
Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., who chairs the Government Operations subcommittee, said he was “thrilled” to have Rep. Porter serve as vice chair of the panel.
“No one does more homework or comes more prepared for a hearing than Representative Porter,” Chairman Connolly said in a statement. “Her leadership, talent, and signature whiteboard will be invaluable as we work to save the United States Postal Service, revitalize a Federal workforce that was attacked by the Trump Administration, work to modernize antiquated information technology systems across government, and ensure states and local governments have the tools they need to help families and businesses recover from the pandemic and economic collapse.”
This will be Rep. Connolly’s second term as chairman of the subcommittee, and Rep. Porter’s first term on the panel.
“Our duty to the American people is to invest their tax dollars in programs that actually get families the help they need,” Vice Chair Porter said. “The Oversight Subcommittee on Government Operations is at the forefront of cracking down on waste, fraud, and abuse that undermines our responsibility to taxpayers. I’m honored to serve as Vice Chair and excited to help lead efforts to defend the U.S. Postal Service, protect whistleblowers, and restore good government.”
