Sens. Todd Young, R-Ind., and Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, have introduced legislation that would task the Department of Commerce (DOC) with creating campaigns to raise awareness and elevate public trust in AI technologies.

The Artificial Intelligence Public Awareness and Education Campaign Act aims to promote responsible use of AI technology and mitigate any possible risks associated with it, the senators said.

“As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly ubiquitous throughout society, it is important that individuals can both clearly recognize the technology and understand how to maximize the use of it in their daily lives,” said Sen. Young.

“The Artificial Intelligence Public Awareness and Education Campaign Act is an important step in ensuring all Americans can benefit from the opportunities created by AI,” the senator added.

“As AI tools and content become increasingly common, it’s essential that the public is aware of the risks and benefits associated with them,” said Sen. Schatz. “Our bill will direct the Commerce Department to educate the public about how best to take advantage of these tools while staying vigilant to AI-enabled scams and fraud.”

The legislation focuses on educating people about their rights regarding AI technology, and providing Americans with knowledge on how to spot AI-generated content online. The bill also seeks to illuminate the amount of AI technology used in everyday applications and showcase the workforce opportunities that the technology can present.

Introduction of the bill follows the Senate’s release earlier this year of its roadmap for AI policy.
