Stephen Smith
Department of State
Stephen F. Smith was appointed the U.S. State Department’s Insider Threat Program Coordinator in January, 2015. He is an accomplished global security executive with an exemplary career with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security. Steve held a series of progressive program management assignments in the international arena, with eight overseas assignments in seven different countries. He has a well-developed talent for building, coaching and leading cohesive and collaborative multi-cultural teams.
Having successfully carried out his senior leadership and security advisory roles for U.S. Ambassadors and senior Department leadership, navigating some of the most critical foreign policy and national security issues domestically and abroad, Steve was selected for the role of the North Atlantic Security Organization’s (NATO’s) Director of Security in 2010. He was highly successful in refocusing NATO’s approach to the emerging security challenges facing the Alliance, to include the task of highlighting and mitigating insider threat inside the 28 member Alliance. After a broad and rewarding career as a special agent in the Diplomatic Security Service, Steve moved into the Insider Threat Coordinator role earlier this year.
In his role as coordinator for the Department’s Insider threat Program, Steve is building a policy and governance structure, operational protocols and procedures, and awareness and training programs to better support a trusted workforce and to detect, deter and mitigate potential insider threat activities.
