Deputy Assistant Administrator W. Bond Wells, Jr. is currently the Director of the US Drug Enforcement Administration’s Office of Special Intelligence.  DAA Wells is a member of the Senior Executive Service and the Intelligence Community’s Senior Executive Leadership Corps

DAA Wells graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and he holds a Master’s Degree in Soviet and East European Studies from the University of Kansas. His military schooling includes the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, the U.S. Army Russian Institute, and the Defense Language Institute (Russian). Commissioned in Armor, DAA Wells served as a Cavalry Officer, Armor Officer, and Soviet Foreign Area Officer.  He is a combat veteran of the first Gulf War in 1991. DAA Wells retired from the US Army in 1995 and entered on duty with DEA in 1997 in the Europe, Asia, and Africa Unit specializing in Eurasian Organized Crime. In 2001, he was the DEA liaison to the Southeast Europe Cooperative Initiative (SECI) in Bucharest, Romania. In 2003, DAA Wells transferred to the Office of Special Intelligence with duty at DEA’s Special Operations Division, where he supported DEA operations targeting the Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC). In 2004, he promoted to Group Supervisor (GS) and transferred to DEA’s Chicago Field Division as the supervisor of the Lake County High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area intelligence Support Center.  He returned to DEA headquarters in 2007, and promoted to Section Chief for Special Projects. He also served as DEA’s lead to the Anti-Drug Intelligence Community Team, liaison to the CIA Crime and Narcotics Center, Section Chief, Intelligence Community Liaison, and Section Chief, Collection and Requirements, Office of National Security Intelligence.

From September 2010 until February 2014, DAA Wells served as the Chief, Office of National Security Intelligence (one of the 16 Intelligence Community agencies).  In February 2014, DAA Wells was appointed to his current position as Director of The Office of Special Intelligence.

Mr. Wells is a graduate of the Intelligence Community Officer Course, the National Senior Executive Leadership Seminar,  The University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business’s Leading the Intelligence Community program,  the Notre Dame Mendoza Business College’s SES Leadership Development Program,  and is a certified Intelligence Community Joint Duty Officer and Counterintelligence Professional
