Garrett Berntsen has been named deputy chief data and AI officer at the U.S. Department of State (DOS) in the agency’s Center of Analytics, according to his LinkedIn account.

“Same great team at U.S. Department of State Center for Analytics, with a slightly updated title,” said Berntsen. “Great to be back!”

As the deputy chief data and AI officer, Berntsen will work on strategic data management responsibilities at the State Department while helping to integrate AI technology to help advance the agency’s mission goals.

Before beginning his latest position at the State Department, Berntsen served on the White House National Security Council as director for technology and national security for about eight months.

Before that he was the State Department’s deputy chief data officer from 2020 to mid-2023.

Prior to his civilian government service, Berntsen was a senior manager at Deloitte, working as a data analytics and strategy consultant for over five years. He is a U.S. Army veteran with service from 2008 to 2013.
