On Tuesday, the Department of Energy (DoE) announced that it would be providing $40 million in funding for research into developing algorithms and software for quantum computers.
“Continued investments in quantum computing will focus the intellectual prowess of our scientists and engineers on the development of technologies that the private sector can convert into commercial applications to improve the lives and security of all Americans,” U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry said in a statement.
The statement cites that applications will be open to universities, national laboratories, industry, and nonprofits. The planned funding will be for five-year projects selected by a peer review process and with outyear funding pending congressional appropriations.
“Leadership in the emerging field of quantum computing is also imperative for the United States, and this drive to develop new quantum computing algorithms and software will be vital to that effort,” Under Secretary for Science Paul Dabbar said.
Letters of intent are due by May 1, 2019 with final applications due May 31, 2019.
