The Democratic National Committee recently posted a job listing for a chief technology officer, a position that would oversee the entire technical infrastructure of the committee.
“This senior technical executive position will set the vision for the Democratic Party’s technology tools, data, and analytics infrastructure, structure technical collaboration architecture, modernize the DNC’s technology infrastructure, products, services, and developer programs, and work with diverse stakeholders to create and support a national ecosystem for innovation and engagement within the Party,” the job listing said.
According to the listing, the position would be responsible for internal and external technical tools, network infrastructure, voter files, and information security training and best practices.
The job posting comes not long after suspected Russian hacking into DNC emails during the 2016 presidential election led to highly public information leaks. During his campaign for DNC chair, current Chair Tom Perez made a point of improving cybersecurity practices, and even called for an in-house chief cybersecurity officer to protect the committee from hacks.
The DNC’s chief information security officer will report to the CTO, which, along with the position’s listed responsibilities, gives the CTO significant influence over the security posture of the DNC.
The job listing also states that the CTO will serve “as a DNC spokesperson on technology topics to external consumers of DNC resources and the broader political community,” placing the position in the public eye.
