The chairmen of the House Intelligence and Oversight and Government Reform committees have asked for classified briefings from top U.S. law enforcement and intelligence agencies on a recent Bloomberg Businessweek report that Chinese hackers infiltrated numerous U.S. companies and government agencies through a supply-chain hardware hack involving implantation in network equipment of a chip that can route data back to China. Companies named in the report have denied its veracity, and the Department of Homeland Security has said it has no reason to doubt the companies. Nevertheless, the House committees asked DHS, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Director of National Intelligence for classified briefings on “this matter and any related matters” by Oct. 22. “The Committees have a continued interest in the protection of the U.S. government supply chain from hostile foreign interference,” the committee chairs said.
