The House Oversight and Reform Committee on April 6 voted to approve the Access for Veterans to Records Act that aims to cut down the backlog of veterans’ records requests at the National Personnel Records Center, which is housed in the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).
The legislation was introduced by Reps. Maloney, D-N.Y., chairwoman of the committee, and Gerry Connolly, D-Va., chairman of the Subcommittee on Government Operations.
The bill would increase funding to help the agency modernize outdated IT systems, modernize its electronic records archive, and “increase the speed and efficiency of NARA’s responses to Freedom of Information Act and special access requests for records.”
The committee also approved and sent along to the full House the Federal Contracting for Peace and Security Act, which would prohibit the Federal government from contracting with companies continuing business in Russia during its war against Ukraine.
“Today the Committee sent a clear message to Vladimir Putin: no more American tax dollars will go towards aiding and abetting your inhumane war against Ukraine,” said Chairwoman Maloney in a statement.
