In a new semiannual report, the Intelligence Community Inspector General (ICIG) within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) says that ODNI must upgrade cybersecurity controls going forward to improve management and risk mitigation of trusted privileged users inappropriately accessing, modifying, destroying, or exfiltrating classified data.

The report details an audit covering the six-month period from April to September 2019, and uses metrics developed by the Office of Management and Budget, Department of Homeland Security, and the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency for the FY19 Inspector General Federal Information Security Modernization Act (FISMA) of 2014.

The results of the audit, ICIG said, will be reported to ODNI in an interagency report and include nine recommendations, with six of those considered “significant.”

Elsewhere in the report, ICIG said it “selected artificial intelligence (AI) as an objective for review due to the presence it has played in multiple documents and reports published by ODNI.” ICIG said it has taken initial actions in building awareness and common understanding within the IC oversight authorities in:

  • Building a Community of Interest;
  • Enhancing individual and collective understanding;
  • Information exchanges and collaboration;
  • Education and training resources; and
  • Developing criteria and measures.

“The ICIG has engaged subject matter experts and stakeholders across the Intelligence Community, the federal government, academia, and industry to begin mapping the landscape of [Augmenting Intelligence using Machines-related] research, planning, implementation, and governance activities,” the report said.
