John Beieler has been tapped to serve as the intelligence community’s first chief AI officer, an Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) spokesperson confirmed to MeriTalk today.
Beieler is serving in this new role on top of his current role as the assistant DNI for science and technology (S&T).
Previously, he served as the director of S&T, after first joining the ODNI team in 2017 as a program manager for its Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) organization.
Beieler’s appointment comes one week after the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released a sweeping new policy to promote the safe, secure, and responsible use of AI.
The policy requires all Federal agencies to appoint a chief AI officer within 60 days, or by May 27, 2024.
“We have directed all Federal agencies to designate a chief AI officer with the experience, expertise, and authority to oversee all … AI technologies used by that agency,” Vice President Kamala Harris told reporters last week.
“This is to make sure that AI is used responsibly, understanding that we must have senior leaders across our government who are specifically tasked with overseeing AI adoption and use,” Harris added.
