Labor Department (DoL) Chief Information Officer (CIO) Gundeep Ahluwalia is stepping down from his role after more than eight years at the agency, and 12 in the Federal government.

Ahluwalia’s last day is Friday, Aug. 16.

A DoL spokesperson confirmed to MeriTalk today that Deputy CIO Louis Charlier will take over the CIO role on an acting basis.

Ahluwalia joined the DoL as deputy CIO in August 2016. He was quickly promoted to CIO just two months later where he has remained for the last eight years. Before that, he served four years at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as the deputy director in the Office of Business Informatics.

Prior to that, Ahluwalia served more than 13 years in the private sector.

It’s not clear where Ahluwalia is headed next but he told his followers on LinkedIn this week to “stay tuned” for his future plans.

“I am humbled by the support I have received over the last decade and continue to get,” he added.

Earlier this year, Ahluwalia and the DoL were recognized for their excellence in IT during MeriTalk’s FITARA Awards ceremony. DoL won a “Most Improved” FITARA Award. On the most recent scorecard, DoL earned a “B.”

“It is an amazing feat. It’s a team sport, right? We work all year round for this moment. So, I brought my team, we brought our departmental budget center here as well, and it’s an amazing feeling to be here. Thank you for recognizing us,” said Ahluwalia during the March ceremony.

“I would like to shout out my entire OCIO team, particularly also my partner on the money side, Geoff Kenyon,” Ahluwalia added. “I think it takes a village, but everybody in OCIO, they’ve just come together, and all the program areas in DoL who cooperate and work with us, because at the end of the day, that is why we exist.”

DoL also won MeriTalk FITARA awards in 2023 and 2019 under Ahluwalia’s leadership.
