Laurence Brewer is stepping down as the chief records officer at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), with his last day on the job set for July 13.

Brewer announced his coming departure in a July 2 memo to agencies, after serving as NARA’s chief records officer since 2015. He is heading to the Justice Department, where he’ll serve as the director at the Office of Records Management Policy.

William Fischer, NARA’s director of the National Declassification Center, will serve as acting chief records officer until NARA finds a permanent replacement.

“I am very proud of the work the records management community has accomplished in the last several years as we work together to deliver on the goals and vision of transitioning to an electronic government and fully digital records management,” Brewer said.

Notably, NARA recently opened its new mass digitalization center in College Park, Md. The new center is equipped with some of the latest high-speed scanners and overhead cameras to digitize government documents at a pace ten times the previous mark.
