The U.S. Navy has kicked off its Artificial Intelligence Applications to Autonomous Cybersecurity Challenge (AI ATAC), sponsored by the Naval Information Warfare Systems Command (NAVWAR) and Program Executive Office for Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence (PEO C4I).

AI ATAC is a prize-based competition that seeks to innovate AI and machine learning (ML) for real-world cybersecurity issues. NAVWAR and PEO C4I will have their eyes peeled for potential nontraditional defense vendors or individuals.

“We are approaching innovation with disciplined urgency. This prize challenge presents a unique opportunity to cast a wider net to get the best technology to the fleet faster,” NAVWAR Commander Rear Admiral Christian Becker said.

The competition began on July 8 with a $100,000 first-place prize at stake, and a $50,000 second-place award up for grabs.

“This challenge is designed for anyone with AI and ML knowledge—whether they’re from a company, a university, a research institution, or even an individual or group of friends who have a good idea,” PEO C4I’s Information Assurance and Cybersecurity Program Office’s deputy program manager John Armantrout said.

Participants should submit an entry response to the challenge that includes a white paper and a corresponding tool no later than Sept. 30.
