The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) announced on May 29 that Scott Flanders will assume the role as the agency’s permanent IT chief.

Flanders, the NRC’s current acting chief information officer (CIO) and former deputy CIO, will assume the role of CIO permanently effective June 2.

In his role as CIO, Flanders is tasked with managing and employing technology to enhance “information access and strengthen agency performance.” He is also charged with overseeing cyber and information security, data management, artificial intelligence, and more.

In his former role as deputy CIO, Flanders planned, directed, and oversaw resources to ensure the delivery of IT and information management services critical to support the NRC’s mission, goals, and priorities.

“His experience with the government’s use of information technology and his deep understanding of the NRC mission will help the agency navigate the challenges of the future,” NRC Acting Executive Director for Operations, Raymond Furstenau, stated in the announcement.

Flanders has been a long-time staffer at the NRC since he first joined the agency in 1991.

“[He] has risen through the ranks at the NRC over many years and has been an outstanding member of the Senior Executive Service since 2004,” Furstenau said.

Prior to joining the Office of the CIO, Flanders headed the Division of Site Safety and Environmental Analysis in the Office of New Reactors. Throughout his career at the NRC, Flanders has led a diverse portfolio of technical organizations supporting the agency’s regulatory programs for nuclear reactors and nuclear materials.
