Sen. Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., said at a Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation subcommittee hearing yesterday that she plans to reintroduce the Code Like a Girl Act, which the senator sponsored in 2017 as a member of the House.
The previous version of the bill directed the National Science Foundation (NSF) to award competitive grants to colleges and other nonprofit organizations “to accelerate research efforts to increase understanding of the factors that contribute to the willingness or unwillingness of girls under the age of 11 to participate in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, including computer science) activities.”
The legislation also directed NSF to make grants to organizations to enter into partnerships with local educational agencies to develop and evaluate interventions in pre-K and elementary school classrooms that seek to increase participation by girls in computer science activities.
The House bill Rosen introduced in 2017 attracted numerous cosponsors but did not make it out of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee.
