A bipartisan AI caucus was announced today, led by Sens. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., and Rob Portman, R-Ohio. One of the main goals of the newly-formed caucus is to connect Congress members and staff with AI experts in the private sector, academia, and the executive branch. The Senate AI Caucus will complement an AI initiative launched by the White House which calls for Federal agencies to prioritize AI research and development called American AI Initiative.

“In the years ahead, it will be critical for policymakers to strike the right balance in developing the technology so that academia, private industry, Federal agencies, and our national labs can harness the enormous potential of AI to the benefit of society and the American people,” Sen. Heinrich said in a press release.

According to the press release, the AI caucus will work to develop smart policy, while maintaining ethical standards and balancing the risks and rewards of AI technology.

“AI is a mix of promise and pitfall, which means, as policymakers, we need to be clear-eyed about its potential,” Sen. Portman said.

Other Senators to join the caucus include: Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, Cory Gardner, R-Colo., Gary Peters, D-Mich., and Joni Ernst, R-Iowa.
