The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has put artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomy technologies on its list of top research priorities for 2024, along with a host of areas more specific to weapons systems.

In its 2024 Air Dominance Board Agency Announcement (BAA) published on Jan. 11, AFRL said it is looking for input from industry on 13 different research areas.

“This market survey is conducted to identify potential sources that may possess the expertise, capabilities, and experience to meet the requirements, translate basic research solutions to broadly defined needs, design and develop state of the art solutions, and evaluate potential for new operational capabilities by submitting white papers against the Air Dominance Effects BAA R&D requirements in 13 munitions related research areas of interest,” AFRL said.

Companies have until Feb. 2 to respond to the announcement.

In addition to AI/automation, the 13 research areas include: Modeling, Simulation, & Analysis (MS&A), Innovative Aircraft Integration Technologies, Find Fix Target Track (F2T2) & Datalink Technologies, and Engagement Management System Technologies.
